According to local folklore, ages ago, two immortal beings played chess atop Son Tra Mountain, locked in an endless stalemate. One day, while some fairy maidens frolicked and bathed at the beach below, distracting one of the immortals, he made a crucial mistake and was defeated. The victorious immortal returned to the heavens, leaving the defeated one behind to ponder his loss. Despite his efforts to find a solution, he remained stuck. In commemoration, the locals erected a stone chessboard, accompanied by a statue of the pensive immortal, naming the mountain peak Ban Co, or Chessboard Peak.
