Unveiling the history of Pho Trach’s sedge weaving

Pho Trach village was founded in the mid-1400s. For centuries, the villagers have made a living by farming rice. During the off-season, they earn additional income by weaving products from grey sedge.

Pho Trach Village is located in a coastal plain area. The area has low-lying areas that are flooded year-round, which makes it a good place for grey sedge grass to grow. In the past, the villagers noticed that wild grey sedge grass could be used to weave beautiful and durable sleeping mats. They started planting sedge grass on the edges of their rice fields. They harvested it once a year, dried it, and stored it carefully so they could use it throughout the year.

In Pho Trach village, the art of sedge mat weaving is passed down from generation to generation. Parents teach their children how to weave sedge, and even women who marry into the village learn how to weave mats.

Beyond their traditional craft of weaving mats for sale, the villagers of Pho Trach have channeled their skills and creativity into a variety of new products. Now they offer fashionable items like bags, hats, and caps, as well as beautiful home decor pieces.
